For the past four years, it’s been our mission at Austin Adventures to help
alleviate the cycle of poverty facing the people of rural Africa. We’ve done so
through the establishment of
Wheels of Change,
a non-profit committed to
delivering donated bicycles to the continent.
With the tireless support of our partner in Africa, Bicycling Empower Network
(BEN) Namibia, Wheels of Change has set out to make a difference across
Africa – an effort that earned Austin Adventures
Travel + Leisure’s
Global Vision Award in 2011.
Most recently, we shipped 300 bikes, parts and
tools to Linyanti, Namibia. Upon delivery, villagers were trained in bike
mechanics and business etiquette; the shipping container, converted into a bike
shop, is now being used to retail, service and rent bicycles at a subsidized cost,
with 100% of profits going back into the community.
For those in need, a bicycle not only provides mobility, but also access to basic
necessities like food, water, employment, healthcare and education. The
donation of a used bike is a
simple action – with the power to change lives.

Wheels of Change effort and to experience for yourself the difference
something as simple as a bike can truly make.
Preserve a Park
At Austin Adventures, our
Preserve a Park Program
aligns each year with a
different National Park. In the past, we’ve selected Parks such as Glacier,
Canyonlands and Crater Lake. Often, these trips sell out quickly, with
contributions going directly to preserving the Park’s natural beauty and
cultural heritage.
For 2014 we’ve chosen
Wind Cave National Park
as our beneficiary. For every
guest who books a spot on one of our two South Dakota adventures, Austin
Adventures will donate $100 to the non-profit, Friends of Wind Cave National
Park. Each trip will feature an educational element woven throughout the week,
including an enriching afternoon or evening with experts from Friends of Wind
Cave. See pages 59 and 75 for details.
“We have found that Austin
Adventures travelers tend to be
globally conscious and socially
responsible, and our alliance with
organizations such as Wheels of
Change is a perfect complement to
their values and those of our company.
The intrinsic benefits for the cyclist are
as priceless as the goodwill it presents
to the people of Africa…
empowerment through mobility.”
Dan Austin
Wind Cave National Park will be the beneficiary of
Austin Adventure’s 2014 Preserve a Park Program.
