This Tour

With its annual rainfall and predictable flood cycles, Botswana’s Selinda Spillway is renowned for attracting a staggering array of wildlife. Set off on foot and by canoe to explore a watery, secluded wilderness on this weeklong walking and paddling safari.

  • Drift quietly along the shallow, game-heavy wetlands of the Okavango Delta by mokoro, on the watch for resident elephant, hippo, lechwe, and the rare sitatunga
  • Take a guided walk on an island teeming with jacanas and wattled cranes, breaking for tea in the shade of a jackalberry tree
  • Spend four nights in fly camps on the Selinda Spillway, the waterway linking Botswana’s Okavango, Linyanti, and Kwando water systems
  • Paddle the Selinda Canoe Trail beside herds of elephants, buffalo, sables, roans, and the occasional pack of wild dogs
  • Wake up to the call of a slaty egret and an array of footprints, large and small, just outside your campsite
  • Savor the spirit of safaris of old as you fall asleep to the sounds of the wild, thrilled by the thought of what another impromptu day in the bush will bring

Nights 1-3:

Pelo Camp
Pelo Camp is a tented, mobile camp in the heart of the Jao Concession in the Okavango Delta. Given its situation on a small island surrounded by permanent water, the area is perfect for mokoro activities in the open, shallow floodplains. The main area comprises a tented dining area and lounge situated under impressive wild date palms, jackalberry and Natal mahogany trees. Five spacious guest tents have en-suite bathrooms and a covered front veranda.

Nights 4-8:

Selinda Canoe Trail
The Selinda Spillwayis the waterway linking Botswana's Okavango Delta and Linyanti, and Kwando water systems. We explore the Selinda Spillway eastward following this meandering route through the 333 000-acre Selinda Reserve. The canoe safari consists of two full days and two half-days of relatively easy paddling and three nights in impromptu fly-camps along the way. Our stops are not pre-arranged. We begin each day at the break of dawn. Whilst paddling, we encounter wildlife along the banks, and disembark our canoes to enjoy walks, looking for tracks and signs of wildlife.

A few more reasons why you've gotta go…

  • 1. With approximately 11 cubic kilometers of water spreading over the 6,000-15,000 km² area each year, the Okavango Delta was declared one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa
  • 2. You may get lucky and find a diamond! Formerly a British colony, diamonds were “discovered” in Botswana only months after its independence. It now accounts for 76% of all exports and is its greatest industry.
  • 3. There is lots to see and not a lot to get in the way. Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world along with Mongolia, Namibia, Australia, and Mauritania.
