Day 1: San José

Arrive in San José at Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport for meet and greet and transfer to the charming Hotel Bougainvillea.

This evening you will have a chance to meet your guides and the rest of your group at the welcome meeting.

Tonight enjoy dinner on your own.

Set among 10 acres of lush gardens, the unique and comfortable Hotel Bougainvillea is a place where guests can truly experience the world famous beauty of Costa Rica.

Original pieces of Costa Rican art complement the stunning landscaped tropical gardens dominated by tall trees, plentiful flowers, ponds and mountain views.

Day 2: Arenal

On Day 2, transfer to the Arenal Volcano area (~ 3 hours), stopping along the way to view La Fortuna Waterfall, a 200 foot-tall waterfall that receives its cool clear waters from the pristine forested mountains of Arenal National Park.

Early afternoon visit to Arenal Vida Campesina, an organic farm that lets you experience life in the Costa Rican countryside with a family who practices newer sustainable agricultural techniques.

Try your hand at harvesting fresh produce such as cassava root, lettuce and plantains, and sample the sweet juice of a freshly crushed sugar cane at the Farm. Learn to make and roll tortillas before feasting on a finger-licking good lunch prepared by your host.

End your day by taking in the breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano from the confines of the comfortable Arenal Observatory Lodge.

Treat yourself to a once-in-a-lifetime adventure at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. This volcano hotel, perched high on a ridge only 1.7 miles from Arenal, boasts the area’s most stunning views of the volcano and Arenal Lake.

Day 3: Arenal

On Day 3, walk through the treetops along the Arenal Hanging Bridges, a complex of suspended platforms that snake through the lush rainforest, learning about the surrounding flora and fauna.

Keep your eyes open for toucans, motmots, trogons, poison dart frogs, howling monkeys, spider monkeys and white-faced capuchin monkeys from ground level to the tips of the trees.

Experience the exhilarating sensation of rappelling down a series of four tropical waterfalls and trek along magical trails in a pristine canyon. Within the confines of your safety harness, descend into areas of enchanting gorges and abundant greenery.

Wrap up your day with a visit to the Ecotermales Hot Springs for the chance to relax in one of four mineral springs, heated naturally by Arenal volcano.

Day 4: Arenal – Manuel Antonio

Depart Arenal for Manuel Antonio National Park (~ 4 hours transfer), home to some of the most well-known and beautiful beaches in Costa Rica.

  • Stop to participate in an Outrigger Kayak Adventure at Playa Agujas
  • Paddle calm waters for 30 to 40 minutes beneath spectacular cliffs filled with pelicans and frigate birds
  • On the beach, strap on a mask and flippers for some of the best snorkeling on the Central Pacific Coast (weather permitting)

Continue on with your shuttle (~1.5 hours) to the peaceful Hotel Si Como No, your accommodation for the next 3 nights.

Borrowing its name from the local expression, “si como no” (sure, why not), this stunning resort is blissfully isolated from the bustle of the main drag but just minutes from the famed Manuel Antonio National Park, miles of white sand beaches, restaurants, domestic airport and the small fishing village of Quepos.

Manuel Antonio is one of the country’s most popular parks because of its unique mix of sandy beaches and lush rainforest trails. Count how many different kinds of flora and fauna you can spot just in the span of a three-hour nature walk or hike!

The forest is home to a variety of wildlife that are accustomed to people and readily seen, including:

  • Sloths & monkeys
  • Armadillos
  • Scarlet-legged land crabs
  • Iguanas
  • Agoutis
  • Pizotes
  • Raccoons, parrots & parakeets

The ocean water temperature is always near a comfortable 80º F – perfect for swimming and other water sports.

* Due to limited luggage allowance for local and charter flights (40 lbs per person), we highly recommend you to pack in a separate bag the clothes you will need during the next 2 days. Please give the rest of your luggage to the driver so he can bring it to San Jose for storage in our office. We will have your luggage meet you upon your return flight from Manuel Antonio.

Surf’s up!

This morning we make a trip to the beach for a 3-hour surfing lesson in one of the best beginner surfing areas in Costa Rica.

After being outfitted with a board, leash and rash guard, a bilingual instructor and his assistants will give you a safety talk and begin to demonstrate the basics of surfing before you even get into the water.

When you feel confident enough to give it a go, your instructor will accompany you into the waves.

Surfing is tiring work, so when you’re ready to take a hard-earned break, help yourself to fresh fruit and delicious cold drinks on the beach. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at the hotel or exploring one of the many activities Manuel Antonio has to offer, including:

  • Boating
  • River rafting
  • Fishing
  • Snorkeling
  • Diving
  • Canopy tours & more (not included)

* Today your guide will return to San Jose. This is the day that your excess luggage will be accompanied to San Jose by your guide.

Day 7: San Jose

Transfer from your hotel to the local airstrip for a 25 minute flight to San Jose Airport.

Upon arrival in San Jose you will be transferred to the international airport for your flight home.

Departure
  • Your trip begins with your arrival in San José at Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport.
  • After passing through Immigration, take the right hand side exit door and look for the Sun Tours representative who will direct you to customs.
  • When you leave the building after clearing customs, look for a Sun Tours representative, who will be holding a sign that says “Costa Rica Sun Tours” with your name on it.
  • Your guide will take you to the Hotel Bougainvillea.
  • Your trip ends with a drop-off at the San José airport three hours prior to your flight departure.

  • Hiking – Easy to moderately strenuous jungle and cloud forest walks and hikes ranging from 1.5 to 3
  • miles.
  • Kayaking – Calm waters, no experience necessary.
