Day 1: Las Terrazas
Valley Landscape

Bienvenido a Cuba! We will all meet at the Havana airport in the morning where our Cuba Unbound tour leader will give a brief orientation. Once we’re all together, the tour will begin as we immediately head west by bus to Las Terrazas and the Sierra del Rosario mountains.

  • La Terrazas is a biosphere under UNESCO safeguard since 1968.
  • Keep an eye out for the 117 different species of birds.
  • Trek along the Sendero La Serafina on a 3 mile trail run through reforested land
  • Or opt for a longer walk throuh Casa Campesino, a lush forest and once-upon-a-time coffee plantation.
  • Conclude the trail with a visit to a fantastic orchid garden.

After our afternoon excursions throughout La Terrazas, we head to Hotel La Moka, our accommodations for the evening.

About Hotel Moka
Hotel Moka brings the outdoors indoors with an immense 100-year-old rain tree growing up through the Lobby and sprouting out the rooftop. It's a charming white and tangerine hotel screened by the green of teak trees. Its' Intimate, romantic, and fun atmosphere make it a memorable stay.

Day 2: Pinar del Rio

Overnight: Hotel Vuelta Abajo

Today starts with a westward journey into one of Cuba's finest national parks.

    • Spend your day walking through the varied landscapes of Valle de Viñales on the many trail systems that sprawl through the valley.
    • See the Mogote dos Hermanas, or two mogote "twin sisters," the remains of limestone hills standing sentinel over stretches of flat fields.
    • Visit one of the underground caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
    • Walk through rows upon rows of tobacco stalks on one of the valley's plantations, followed by a a trip to a tobacco factory.

After a a day satiated with fresh air and well-used legs, head south to Pinar del Rio where we check into our charming, historic hotel.

Located in downtown Pinar del Rio, Hotel Vuelta Abajo's historic building and spacious high ceilings provide you with beautiful lodgings in the heart of town. The attentive staff will ensure a comfortable stay with old-world charm.

Day 3: Pinar del Rio

Begin with a walking tour of Pinar del Rio, known for neoclassical buildings and art nouveau decorations, all paid for by the lucrative tobacco trade of years past.

  • Visit the Francisco Donatién Cigar Factory that is located in a former prison transformed in the 1960s, followed by a stop across the street at Casa del Tobacco to buy a few cigars for yourself.
  • Later we'll make our way to Havana Vieja, also known as Old or Colonial Havana. See historic sites of revolution and colonialism and Havana's turbulent past, the result of plundering privates and affluent colonials.

End the day with a fine dinner at one of Havana's best paladars, topped off with a visit to Fabrica des Artes, where the best of Cuba's avant-garde art can be experienced.

Day 4: Cienfuegos

Overnight: Casas Particulares

Depart from Havana and drive past fields of sugar cane en route to Cuba's Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos.

  • Your first stop will be the Jardin Botanico Cienfuegos, where American sugar baron Edward F. Atkins hoped to introduce new varieties of sugar cane. Instead, he created Cuba's largest gardens with over 2000 species of plants.
  • Take a stroll past pastel-painted columns in Paseo del Prado and find the iconic statue of Benny Moré, the "barbarian of rhythm".
  • We'll make our way to the waterfront walkway and see the glittering waters of the natural harbor, where poets and musicians romance passerbys every night.

After a day of engaging with cuentapropistas on our stroll through this prosperous city, spend the evening with a musical performance such as Cantores de Cienfuegos or the local chamber ocrchestra.

Day 5: Trinidad

Take a drive along the coast towards the historical town of Trinidad.

  • Once home to dozens of sugar refineries, the natural splendor of the surrounding countryside gives way to forested trails and crystal clear pools of water, perfect for a morning hike and swim.
  • Spend the afternoon within the atmospheric, tranquil town of Trinidad where Italian frescoes, finely wrought chandeliers, and bone china still grace plantation era mansions.

Dine at a local restaurant and spend the evening on the city's steps listening to an outdoor concert, making the difference clear between peaceful Trinidad and feisty Cienfuego.

Day 6: Playa Larga

We depart Trinidad early and begin the trek into the crenellated, Caribbean pine-coated Sierra Escambray mountains.

    • Spend the morning hiking one of the many paths through the Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes that lie between the mountains.
    • Take a path to a 190”™ waterfall that tumbles down to swimming holes below, where only the most intrepid adrenaline junkies dare to jump.
    • If you're not feeling too adventurous, hike the Sendero La Batata, or Sweet Potato, Trail, taking you through the forest to a prehistoric cave and its underwater river.
    • By mid-afternoon we leave the Park and start our drive to Playa Larga, a tranquil village set on the beach at the head of the Bay of Pigs, where the infamous 1960s CIA-sponsored invasion took place.

When we arrive, those interested may want to take a swim at the beautiful beach just a few yards from our accommodations and enjoy a tropical sunset followed by a home-cooked meal, abundant in local Cuban delicacies including fresh seafood.

Day 7: Playa larga

Overnight: Casas Particulares

We'll spend the morning of day 7 at the Ciénaga de Zapata, a national park with expansive tracts of dense forests and mangrove-lined swampland, the peninsula is wild and largely untouched.

    • See the abundance of wildlife that call Ciénaga de Zapata home, such as crocodiles, iguana, flamingos, and boars.
    • Birders will find endemic species such as the Cuban pygmy owl, bee hummingbird and Zapata rail.
    • After a picnic lunch, we drive to one of our favorite snorkeling spots not far from Playa Giron, where we'll learn and experience firsthand the health of Cuba's reef system.
    • Enjoy an afternoon of snorkeling with colorful fish in the transparent waters, or relax on the warm sand.

Return to our Casa in Playa Larga for a presentation on Zapata National Park from the park's director, topped off with a festive dinner of delicious, authentic Cuban fare.

Day 8: Havana
Meals Included:  B, L, D
Overnight: Hotel Ambos Mundos, Telegrafo, Presidente (or similar)

After breakfast we'll make our way back to Havana, with a few fun pit stops along the way.

    • Opt to stop at Criadero de Cocodrilos for a short tour to see the Cuban crocodiles and learn about restoring the vulnerable wild population while getting up close and personal with this prehistoric-looking animal.
    • Continue on to Hemingway's former estate of Finca Vigia, where he found inspiration for several of his books, and tour the Museo set on the estate.
    • Back in Havana, explore the vast crafts and art market of Mercado San José.

Enjoy your final night in Cuba with a farewell dinner out on the town.

Day 9: Havana

We breakfast early and make our way to the airport in time to meet your departing flights.
