From the spectacular river and wildlife-rich terrain of Meru National Park to the legendary tribesmen and wild game of the Masai Mara National Reserve, venture away from the masses into the heart of Kenya on this not-to-be-missed African safari.

  • Set off at first light in search of Bisinandi Reserve’s countless species of wild game, including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino, gazelle, zebra, kudu, and giraffe
  • Fish one of the clear rivers of Meru National Park for catfish, barble, and tilapia (our chefs will serve up your catch for dinner!)

Tour Itinerary

9 days/8 nights

Nairobi, Kenya (NBO)

Day 1: Meru
Meru

Overnight: Meru Camp

Morning flights arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport where you’ll be met by an Austin Adventures representative and shuttled 45 minutes to Wilson Domestic Airport for your scheduled flight to Meru.

On arrival at Meru Airstrip you will be met and driven the short distance to your home for the next 3 nights, Meru Camp, a luxury tent camp situated in the Bisanandi Reserve just outside of Meru National Park.

Eat a delicious lunch and relax poolside before heading out on your first game drive in the cool of the afternoon.

Afterward, return to camp just before dark and enjoy a candlelit dinner before you settle in for an evening of preparation for the adventures ahead!

About Meru Camp
This 12 bedded luxury semi-permanent camp situated just outside the park in Bisanandi Reserve, set above the pretty Bisanandi River, offers visitors a chance to visit one of Kenya’s most magical parks away from the masses.

Each tent is furnished with a huge iron bed and has its own en-suite bathroom, with traditional bucket shower and flushing loo.

In addition, there is 24 hour solar lighting in the tents, whilst the rest of the camp is lit by traditional tilly lamps. Informal dining is hosted in the mess tent or around the stunning swimming pool.

Day 2: Bisinandi Reserve

Overnight: Meru Camp

Wake up early to fresh coffee or tea bedside before you head out on an early game drive at first light. Take with you a packed breakfast or choose to eat a full breakfast once back at the camp.

Keep your eyes open for wildlife as you spend the morning exploring the Bisinandi Reserve, including:

  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs

Opt for a short guided walk on the reserve before lunch before heading out to the Rhino Sanctuary to spot some of the 60 black and white rhino that call this place home.

Finish off your day by fishing in one of the stunningly clear rivers for catfish, barble, or tilapia, which if successful can be cooked up for dinner!

Dine back at camp before a restful sleep.

Day 3: Tana River

Overnight: Meru Camp

This morning, don’t forget your packed lunch as we head out for a full day to the Tana River.

Keep a keen eye out as you sit back and relax on this wonderful game drive. Stop by the grave of the famous lioness, Elsa, forever immortalized in the film, Born Free.

On our return to camp this afternoon, we will visit the Boran Cultural Centrer as well as the local school.

Day 4: Sosian Ranch / Nyambene Hills / Mt. Kenya

Overnight: Sosian Ranch

Today we travel to Sosian Ranch (5 – 6 hours) in our comfortable 4x4 land cruiser, eating breakfast along the way.

We will drive through the pretty Nyambene Hills, onto the foot slopes of Mt Kenya and then back down onto the Laikipia Plateau, making a stop along the way for snacks in Nanyuki.

We arrive at Sosian, a 24,000-acre private, working ranch, in time for lunch.

This afternoon, opt for a horseback or camel ride to explore the southern end of the ranch or take a walk along the river, pausing to take in the stunning waterfalls at your turnaround point.

Eat an early dinner before we head out for a night safari with spotlights in search of leopard and other nocturnal animals, such as aardvark and the smaller gennet and serval cats.

About Sosian Ranch
‘Sosian’, the Samburu word for ‘Wild Date Palm’, combines the tame with the wild; ideal for those looking for a unique and intimate bush experience.

The 24,000-acre private, working ranch sits on the Laikipia plateau, 80 kms west of Mt Kenya, offering pure wilderness. Guests are accommodated in an elegant 1940’s farmhouse that has been beautifully renovated. The lodge sleeps 14 people and has a swimming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable garden.

Day 5: Sosian Ranch

Overnight: Sosian Ranch

Awaken early to a steaming hot mug of coffee as you prepare to head out north of the ranch, up onto the open plains.

  • Scan the surrounding openness for some of Kenya’s rarer species such as Jackson’s hartebeest, Oryx and aardwolf
  • Sit under the shade of an acacia tree near one of the many dams of the ranch as you enjoy a late morning brunch

Upon returning to the lodge, relax by the pool or try your hand at a game of tennis.

After tea, meet the ranch cattle manager and take a guided tour of the stud breeding herds – some of Kenya’s finest – showcasing the balance between cattle ranching and wildlife conservation.

Back at the lodge, throw on some warm clothes because tonight we’re headed out to a bush dinner.

Tonight, choose to sleep under the stars in a simple fly camp, falling asleep to the sounds of the African bush.

Day 6: Masai Mara

Overnight: Mara Camp

After a tasty breakfast, wish farewell to the Sosian Ranch as we take off for the Nanyuki airstrip (2 hours).

Board your plane for a 1 hour scheduled flight to the Masai Mara. From the Musiara airstrip, a guide will meet you and transfer you to Mara Camp, situated on Mara North Conservancy, north of the Masai Mara Game Reserve.

This afternoon you will head out in custom made Landcrusiers into the Mara North Conservancy where the game viewing is superb and the chances of seeing the big cats are very high.

Experience a sundowner in front of a campfire, overlooking the Masai Mara ecosystem – what a breathtaking way to finish the day!

On return to camp take a hot shower and feast on a sumptuous dinner served in the candlelit mess tent before heading off to sleep.

About Mara Camp
This 12 bedded luxury semi-permanent camp situated on Mara North Conservancy, north of the Masai Mara Game Reserve, is an area full of wildlife but far from any lodge.

Mara Camp employs and trains local Masai guides and works with the community employing many in the camp staff. The Mara offers amazing game viewing throughout the year and features the annual wildebeest migration in July – September.

Day 7: Masai Mara / Mara River

After an early wake up call, we head out for a full day on the Masai Mara Reserve.

  • We will head to the Mara River and visit one of the main crossing points for the wildebeest and zebra as they brave crocodile infested waters in search of greener pastures
  • Make sure to bring your camera today as there will be many great photo opportunities and the wildlife sightings are guaranteed to WOW you!
Day 8: Masai Village

Overnight: Mara Camp

This morning, enjoy a big breakfast before departing for a local village to witness the traditional life of a Masai herdsman.

Take advantage of the opportunity to purchase locally made crafts and jewelry. We will also visit the local guiding school, where all of the Mara guides got their start!

After lunch back at camp, we will head out for our final game drive with sundowners, returning to camp just before dark in time for hot showers and a farewell dinner.

Day 9: Nairobi

After breakfast, you will take your final scheduled flight back to Wilson Airport in Nairobi.

From here you will follow through with your post trip plans or take your flight back home.

  • Your trip begins with your arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, where you’ll be met by an Austin Adventures / Classic Safaris representative and shuttled to Wilson Domestic Airport for your scheduled flight to Meru.
  • Once in Meru, you will be taken to your home for the next three nights, Meru Camp. Your trip ends with a flight to Wilson Airport in Nairobi in time for your departure flights home.
