Tour Itinerary

5 days/4 nights

Iquitos, Peru (IQT)

Day 1: Lima / Iquitos / M/V Aqua
Lima / Iquitos / M/V Aqua
Meals Included:  D
Overnight: M/V Aqua

After arriving at Iquitos International Airport, you will be met and shuttled through the Peruvian countryside to the small village of Nauta (1.5 hours).

From there, board the M/V Aqua, your upscale river cruise boat and home for the next 4 nights.

Take a tour of your vessel as your experienced crew help you settle into your cabin. Set sail as dusk falls, enjoying a local Pisco Sour, made from a Peruvian grape brandy.

Before dinner, enjoy a brief orientation, learning about the wildlife you will see in the days to come, as well as the history and geography of the Amazon basin.

Dinner is a feast of traditional Amazonian/ Peruvian cuisine, created by Executive Chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino.

Before bed, kick back on the observation deck under a star-lit Amazonian sky.

About the M/V Aqua
The 130-foot-long, M/V Aqua is the first true luxury cruise ship on the northern Amazon River in Peru and was custom built for Aqua Expeditions by Peruvian architect Jordi Puig in 2007 to offer an extraordinary level of comfort for their guests.

The M/V Aqua can accommodate a maximum of 24 cruise ship guests plus crew. This luxury cruise ship is the perfect size to sail along the Amazon River, providing extremely comfortable lounge, dining and sleeping accommodations and modern navigation technologies and standards for cruise ship travel and safety on the water.

The M/V Aqua’s twelve oversized cruise ship suites, including 4 Master suites, feature en suite sitting areas and generous outward-facing picture-windows with panoramic Amazon river views. Each of the handsomely decorated, air-conditioned cruise ship suites measure between 230 to 240 square feet. Four of these suites can be interconnected, to cater to families.

Day 2: Ucayali / Yanallpa / Dorado River / Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
Ucayali / Yanallpa / Dorado River / Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
Meals Included:  B, L, D
Overnight: M/V Aqua

This morning we will board the skiffs to cruise the the Yanallpa River, an amazing black water stream part of the vast Amazon flooded forest.

As we explore what scientists call a “gallery forest” because of its narrow vegetation creating a tunnel of leaves, keep your eyes open for parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys.

Then, enjoy lunch back on board the M/V Aqua.

This afternoon, take a magical journey through the “Mirrored Forest” of the Dorado River, seeing towering trees reflected in the black water river, while spotting dozens of enchanting parrots, blue-yellow macaws, and a great variety of primates and sloths.

As we make our way back to our vessel, you will also have the chance to see caimans, frogs, and fishing bats.

Day 3: Puinahua River / Hatum Posa Lake/ Pacaya River
Puinahua River / Hatum Posa Lake/ Pacaya River
Meals Included:  B, L, D
Overnight: M/V Aqua

On Day 3, rise early to cruise Hatum Posa Lake, a beautiful and intricate ox-bow lake, where we will almost certainly see monkeys and many types of birds, including neo-tropical cormorants, egrets, herons, hawks, and horned screamers.

After breakfast, your guides will introduce you to native people practicing subsistence farming and how they cultivate wild plants and trees to earn farm income.

Deep in the primary forest, you’ll see a wealth of fruit trees and medicinal plants hidden deep in the jungle. Afterward, enjoy lunch back on board the ship.

Late afternoon we head out on the skiff in search of monk saki monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and howler monkeys.

When night falls, listen to the Amazon rainforest symphony of nocturnal animals sending their shrill calls across the tree tops. Taking the skiffs back to the M/V Aqua, your guides will use their special spotlight torches to locate night creatures, including perhaps, huge caimans.

Day 4: Puinahua / Carocurahuayte Lake
Puinahua / Carocurahuayte Lake
Meals Included:  B, L, D
Overnight: M/V Aqua

Back on the Pacaya River as the sun rises, seek out a treasure trove of wildlife including parrots, macaws, toucans, and many kinds of monkeys—as well as some “surprise” species that you have never seen before.

Stopping near a popular dolphin feeding spot, witness quite a show as you enjoy your “bag breakfast” of light sandwiches and fresh juice.

Upon returning to the M/V Aqua, we begin sailing downriver towards Iquitos as we rest and eat lunch.

This afternoon, we will travel to our fishing “hot spot,” Carocurahuayte Lake, where you will be certain to catch some of the more than 3,000 species of tropical fish that live in the Amazon basin.

Our key focus will be on piranhas, those small, carnivorous fish with a big reputation for being scary. Once back on board the ship, we continue sailing towards Iquitos through the night as you reminisce over your Amazon journey at a special farewell dinner.

Day 5: Iquitos / Airport
Iquitos / Airport
Meals Included:  B, L

Weather and time permitting, this will be the last opportunity to see how people live along the Amazon—by visiting the lively riverside community of Belen, in Iquitos, by skiff.

Here, where the houses and shops actually float on the river during some months, you will see the bustling food market for the entire Peruvian Amazon.

Return to the ship for packing and a light lunch before disembarking in Iquitos. Stopping by the Manatee Rescue Center will give us a chance to learn about how biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have seized from local people and fishermen.

Then, we’ll head over to the San Juan Amazonian Indian Market for a last chance to shop for local crafts. Late afternoon, your guides will help you check in for your flight back to Lima.
