Born in California, Dan first ignited his passion for adventure travel in the 1970’s as partner of a rafting company in the Pacific Northwest. His lust for travel soon took him to Alaska, where he saw opportunity as the owner of a construction company developing projects from remote Alaskan villages to military bases in Hawaii and The Azores. In 1994, seeking a new challenge, Dan and a partnership group bought Backcountry Tours of Bozeman, Montana. The purchase turned out to be the catalyst for things to come. In 2000, Dan partnered with retired industrialist and financier Paul Lehman and Austin-Lehman Adventures was born. Along the path to founding one of the world’s most recognized active travel brands, Dan founded the non-profit Wheels of Change organization dedicated to empowering rural Africans through mobility via donated bicycles.

Carol Austin, born and raised in Montana. Grew up exploring the Rocky Mountains and Canada. Even after all of these years, Yellowstone is her favorite place on earth! She didn’t actually branch out into traveling the world until she was much older. Through Austin Adventures she’s had the chance to visit many wonderful places, but her bucket list is still very long, and of course it grows every year. Working along with her husband Dan, the summer of 2013 was her 15th season with Austin Adventures. When asked the favorite things about her job, it would have to be working with both guests and operators from around the world. From that one can learn something new every day.

After moving to a new neighborhood at age five, Adam took off on his bike in search of new friends in Minnesota. More than thirty years later Adam still enjoys making friends on his bike while cycling around Europe. Adam has lived the life of a nomad, having taught English in China for two years, managed a beach resort in Mexico for three years and now lives in Holland with his wife since 2011 where they are starting a family, trying to learn Dutch, and playing as many sports with the locals as possible.
Becky was raised in Montana and Wyoming and loves adventuring with her grandchildren.
She graduated from Montana State University Billings with a degree in accounting. She spends most of her free time with her grandkids exploring new places and reading- but when given the chance, she’s always game for fishing, camping, kayaking, and basically any excuse to get to the mountains. The best thing in life is getting to share her love of the outdoors with others. Live life full of love, happiness and exploring. There’s always more to learn and see!

Maureen was born and raised in Montana. She has traveled domestically throughout the United States and abroad. While earning her business degree in finance, Maureen traveled to France and spent a month in Japan covering cities from Tokyo to Kyoto. Her favorite memories abroad were spending time with her host family in Kumamoto and celebrating her birthday in Tokyo! It wasn’t until meeting her husband Mike, a Montana native too, that she started to enjoy and appreciate her own backyard in Montana. She loves spending time with family and friends, spoiling her dog, Beckham, rooting for the Minnesota Vikings, learning about other cultures and reading about travel and fashion.
“The biggest adventure you can take is to live the life of your dreams.”
A fifth-generation Montanan from Billings, Melanie Hoefle recently graduated from the University of Wyoming in Marketing. She spent her childhood chasing after her older siblings, climbing trees, swimming in lakes and rivers, skiing, and running around campsites. The majority of her spring breaks were consumed with hiking around Arches and backpacking through Canyonlands. Melanie loves to paint, cook, climb, and bike during her free time, and is thrilled to be a part of the Austin Adventures team.
