I was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada during a blizzard. My family loved going to the mountains on weekends, especially for skiing. The mountains have always been an important part of my life. My family also liked to travel with many road trips across Canada and the United States, a trip to Hawaii and another to Deutschland.
After High School I thought about becoming an engineer so that I could build robots, I am not really wired for engineering as it happens. When I found out I could go to university to work in the mountains I knew where my true course lay. I graduated from Mount Royal University in Calgary from the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership Program in 2009.
I started working as an outdoor professional in 2004. I guided remote wilderness canoe trips in Northern Manitoba and Northern Ontario. I worked for a series of holiday camps in England for a year teaching all sorts of activities including, climbing, paddling, archery, ATVing, high ropes and fencing. I returned to work in Canada at a number of children’s’ camps across the country where I supervised high ropes courses, trained young adults to be trip leaders and ran tripping and educational programs.
I took a short break to live in Calgary, teach climbing, work in stores to replenish gear and volunteered with local schools. The break is done and now I am energized and excited to be guiding trips in the Mountain Parks of Canada. What’s your favorite vacation destination? Right now it’s Japan. I went for the first time in spring 2017 for a month and immediately began working towards a much longer holiday there that will really let me immerse myself in the culture and way of life. What is your favorite hike? My favourite hike is going to the Giant Steps in Paradise Valley. The hike is nestled quietly between Lake Louise and Lake Moraine. What is your favorite bike ride? My favourite bike ride is really anywhere around the paths and trails of Calgary. Calgary has so many paths along the rivers through large wilderness parks through the whole city. As a kid I used to ride my bike all summer hardly seeing the same trails. Favorite Movie? The Goonies, because who wouldn’t like to go on an adventure to find long lost pirate treasure. Favorite Book? The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien was the original adventure fantasy novel for me. I first read it in grade 2 and have been fascinated by dragons, dwarves, elves, goblins and all things fantasy ever since. Favorite Song? The Future Soon by Jonathan Coulton. A very relatable song about a kid who wants to build robots and be accepted by others. When did you first catch the travel bug? I was always travelling with my family growing up but it wasn’t until I started travelling on my own motivation that it really took hold. In university I was booked to go on a spring break climbing trip that got cancelled last minute. A friend and I got our money back and took it to a travel agent and asked what the cheapest flights were that would take us over an ocean. We ended up in London England for 8 days seeing the sights and meeting great people. Now I am mostly earning money just to go to the next experience. What are your hobbies? In my free time I am skiing, paddling, reading, writing and playing games. If I ever get a workshop though I’ll start making robots too.
