Jonathan was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina. At an early age he was introduced to hiking, camping and whitewater rafting all over the southeastern United States and was hooked! At the age of 18 he enlisted as a medic in the Army Reserves which sent him to many different parts of the world including the Middle East, Europe, Central America and all over the United States. Jonathan has studied exercise science at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington however plans to attend the University of Montana in Missoula this fall to complete his undergraduate degree. He then plans to attend a Physician’s Assistant program to one day return to his passion of working in healthcare. His winters are spent skiing/snowboarding while also teaching children to ski at an exclusive resort in Big Sky. In the summer he enjoys exploring Montana’s back country while occasionally rock climbing and doing hikes with his dog, Kenya. He also spends his offseason coaching youth soccer, another lifelong passion of his. Jonathan currently resides in Big Sky, MT with plans to relocate to beautiful Missoula, MT where he will continue schoolTrips Guided by Jonathan Calvert:
What's your favorite bike ride?
The coast path in South Devon that I used to ride with my friends growing up. We'd charge towards the main tourist beach through tall oak forest, climb a big muddy hill (normally pushing the bikes!), then dodge bumps on a long trail catching glimpses of the pristine blue ocean below us through the trees. Halfway round the ride was a sheltered and little-known cove with clear water and a myriad of kelp and rock-pool life where we could swim and bask on the rocks before heading back home.
What's your favorite vacation destination?
This is one of those questions you hate to get asked b/c there are so many places that come to mind. Up to this point in my life though I think I would have to say Moab, Utah. There is something deeply spiritual about this place. Every time I leave I have a more profound sense of self and purpose. It has almost a cleansing effect on the soul. Good vibes all around.
What's your favorite hike?
I'm going to go with Beehive Basin in Big Sky, MT because aside from it being absolutely beautiful it is a hike that I have had the pleasure of sharing many times with some of my closest friends, family, and of course my sweet pup. Lots of good memories on this trail.
What's your favorite bike ride?
The Virginia Creeper trail in SW Virginia. It is a beautiful 35 mile trek that I biked with my mom, dad and brother some years ago. It's not often the four of us get to spend time together so this trail, too, holds much sentimental value.
Rudy is one of my all time favorites.
Into Thin Air is probably the most gripping book I have ever read. If you've ever read it you know how hard it is to put down. Jon Krakauer details his personal experience and involvement during the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster.
Power to Love by Jimi Hendrix has got to be my all time favorite. If you're not a fan of blues and rock & roll, this song will change that.
When did you first catch the travel bug?
My first experience was when I was 5 traveling to parts of Europe with my grandparents. I can vividly remember those nude beaches to this day! However 2003 is when I entered the military which sent me all over the world. When I was done with the Army all I wanted to do was explore on my own terms and continue to search for that next adventure. A couple years later I packed up, headed west and haven't looked back since.
What are your hobbies?
Chasing powder on skis or snowboard, hiking, biking, golfing, climbing, exploring.
