Guide Biography:

Justin M July 2015

Justin Modroo grew up in Billings Montana enjoying the outdoors by hunting, fly fishing, backpacking, skiing and playing soccer. He was also lucky enough to have a loving family that enjoyed the outdoors going on camping trip all around Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Yellowstone. After graduating from Billings West High School in 1996, he moved to Golden Colorado to attend the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) to study geophysics. During this time in Colorado he also pursed a skiing career in Big Mountain skiing. In 2001, Justin graduated from CSM with a B.S. degree in Geophysical Engineering. With a growing skiing career, Justin was also able to complete a M.Sc. in Geophysics from CSM in 2004. From 1999-2008, Justin’s skiing career blossomed while competing on the World Big Mountain Freeskiing Tour traveling around the world. Justin was ranked in the top 20 in the World multiple years, with a personal best 6th overall on the tour in 2004. Justin currently continues to his skiing career as a model, volunteer ski patrol, head coach of the Silver Run Ski Education Foundation’s Freeride Team, and Vice-President/owner of Beartooth Basin summer ski area.

Justin’s geophysics career has specialized on mineral exploration around North America, working as a consultant for numerous companies looking for mainly precious metals and hydrocarbons. In 2011, Justin earned status of Professional Geologist according to the state of Idaho.

In 2015, Justin started his professional guiding career with Austin Adventures, guiding Teton, Yellowstone, and Montana trips. Today, Justin lives in Red Lodge, Montana and enjoys spending time outdoors in the greater Yellowstone area.

This is a really tough question. I would have to say that a new destination would be my favorite, the thrill of exploring somewhere new!

Anywhere in the mountains.

When did you first catch the travel bug?
Growing up in Montana camping with my family and going to ski races around the west. And also traveling with a soccer team.

Hunting, fly fishing, backpacking, skiing, hiking, biking, mineral exploration, learning new things, and playing soccer
