Our AA trip was a wonderful introduction for us and our two teens to how much of Nicaragua has to offer. Our week featured an engaging mix of adventures and activities in the land of lakes and volcanoes. We met some of the warm (and baseball crazed) Nicas and enjoyed learning of their history and culture. Very highly recommended. We'd love to go back.

After completing the immigration formalities, our driver and English speaking tour guide will be waiting for you at the exit of the airport to take you to transfer you to Granada, about an hour’s drive away, where you’ll arrive to Hotel Plaza Colón, your accommodation for three nights.

About Hotel Plaza Colon

Recently rebuilt, this old colonial house located just in front of the main square provides a very comfortable stay to its guests.

The colonial architecture and precious wood balconies oriented to the park are the main essence of the hotel. During the second phase of restoration, more rooms have been added and the second patio provides a pretty swimming pool.

Antique furniture, room service, and kind attention of the staff are just a part of your stay. A coffee shop and wine shop are within walking distance.

Day 2: Granada / Masaya
volcano in Nicaragua
Meals Included:  B, L, D

After breakfast we will head out on a morning tour of Granada’s main sights. No visit to Granada is complete without a tour of the city’s historic center. Founded by the Spanish in 1524, Granada is one of the oldest colonial cities in the America’s. On your guided tour, you travel both on foot and by traditional horse-drawn carriage to explore interesting sites including the San Francisco church and adjacent San Francisco Convent, built in 1529, as well as several other famous Nicaragua churches. After lunch, we take a cooking class by first seeking out ingredients at the local market. Then we’ll learn the ins and outs of Nicaraguan cuisine by making a main dish, side dishes, a typical Nicaraguan drink and of course, dessert! Late afternoon, we’ll visit Volcano Masaya National Park. Wildlife is very active at twilight and we hope to see green parakeets returning to their nests inside the crater.

We’ll pass by local fishing communities where we’ll get a glimpse of daily island life. Later, we’ll be driven to the top of Mombacho Volcano in a truck. After a quick trip to the scientific station, we’ll explore this impressive volcano on a guided walk. The Crater Trail leads you around the crater through dense cloud forest with occasional views of Granada, Las Isletas, Laguna de Apoyo and the Masaya Volcano. Keep an eye out for howler and white faced monkeys! Afterwards, we head down the mountain to do a thrilling canopy zip lining tour!
