Day 1: Cultural Triangle

Arrive in Colombo and check into The Ulagalla Resort. Unwind and spend the afternoon by the pool or with a cup of Ceylon Tea and a good book. Rest up with a good night's sleep to prepare for the adventure that awaits you tomorrow.

Day 2: Anuradhapura & Mihintale

Enjoy a breakfast of string hoppers, little dough circles, with a side of a coconut chilly garnish called pol sambol. Today we tour the city of Anuradhapura, the ancient home of Sinhalese Kings.

  • Visit the sacred Bo Tree, the world's oldest tree at over 2000 years old, guarded by monks day and night. It is said to have sprung from a sampling of the tree that Buddha meditated under in India.
  • Explore the extensive history of Anuradhapura through the ruins of Dagabas Temples, lusciously landscaped gardens, and pristine reservoirs.
  • Travel to Mihintale, the birth of buddhism in Sri Lanka, and pilgrimage site filled with archaeological value.

Return to The Ulagalla Resort and spend some time on your own with a horseback lesson and dinner.

Day 3: Moyo & Satonda Islands

Overnight: The Katharina or The Ombak Putih

After another scrumptious breakfast at The Ulagalla Resort, we'll head off to explore the Ritigala Cave Complex.

  • Feel like you're wandering through an undiscovered world straight out of Indiana Jones in one of Sri Lanka's most famous sights.
  • Get an in depth look of this archealogical site whose mysterious nature leads down long pathways into thick jungle and stone-lined reservoirs.
  • Take time to sit and and connect with nature in ancient sacred grounds.
  • Later in the evening, hike to the wondrous Sigirya Rock Fortress where you'll be rewarded with views of rich forests punctuated by rock formations before returning to the hotel.
Day 4: Madulkelle

Today we'll leave the Cultural triangle and head to Madulkelle. Along the way we'll take in Panoramic views of misty mountains, stunning valleys, ancient rock formations, lush forests, crystal clear streams, beautiful animal and plant life, paddy fields, and traditional villages.

Day 5: Madulkelle

In the morning enjoy a nice walk through the lush green tea plantations to sweeping vistas the Knuckles Range is an absolute paradise for trekkers and hikers. Trek through quaint little trails winding across crystal clear streams, gorgeous waterfalls, and dense forests and even terraced paddy fields, while you enjoy the coolness and fresh air of the Sri Lankan countryside.

Day 6: Madulkelle to Gal Oya

Overnight: Gal Oya Lodge

After breakfast, we'll begin our drive to Gal Oya. The drive is long, but you'll want the rest after the previous day's hikes. Once we get to Gal Oya, take in the unexplored treasure of Sri Lanka. Get comfortable in your rustic lodging, meet the excellent team of local guides, and eat some of the best food you can find in the country.

Discover Sri Lanka's forgotten National Park, Gal Oya. With the country's largest lake, the wildlife is best seen from a boat safari, especially the swimming elephants.

Day 7: Gal Oya

Today we'll take a boat safari on Gal Oya Lake, the biggest in Sri Lanka.

  • You may be lucky enough to see elephants swimming between islands or bathing at the lake's edge.
  • Immersed in their habitat, spot crocodiles, deer, elephants, and rare species of birds.
Day 8: Yala

Overnight: Kulu Safari

We'll make our way to Yala, with a few memorable stops along the way.

  • Visit archaeological site Maligavila Vihara, a quiet and peaceful place to stretch our legs.
  • See majestic elephants, fine-feathered peacocks, great black bears, and agile leopards in Yala National Park
  • Encounter Rajah the elephant on the elephant tollway. He has a pesky habit of standing right in the middle of the road, waiting for some friendly passerbys to give him a snack.

We'll stop for the night at our tented safari campground.

Day 9: Yala

Overnight: Kulu Safari

Let the experts at Kulu Safari show you around for the day. This group knows all the secrets of Yala National Park. Skip the crowds and take the Kataragama entrance. We'll be able to explore more remote areas of the park where there are hardly any visitors other than leopards, elephants, buffalo, bears, and jackals.

Day 10: Galle

Overnight: The Fort Bazaar

We'll leave Yala National Park behind and head to the heritage site of Galle.

  • Old Galle is a unique example of a preserved 17th century colonial fortress. It's a living monument with a bustling community within the great ramparts, massive bastions, pepper pot towers, while narrow streets display its Dutch heritage with beckoning pillared verandas and fretwork facades.
  • Take a walk around and peep through frangipani filled courtyards at houses, galleries or shops selling antiques, spices, pictures and hand-woven sarongs.

We'll rest up for the night at The Fort Bazaar.

Day 11: Mirissa

Overnight: The Fort Bazaar

Grab the breakfast to go, because we're heading out early this morning. A short drive to Mirissa will lead us to a morning of whale watching.

  • Swimming about in the sapphire waters we'll see sperm whales, fin whales, and blue whales.
  • After a peaceful and awe-inspiring morning we'll head back to Galle where the tourist attractions will be set aside and we'll see the true Galle.
  • Take the time to sample tea with a gentleman who pours a magical cup, enjoy a chat with a passionate local amateur historian, or buy some samosas from a smiling lad on a bicycle cart.
Day 12: Colombo

Overnight: Galle Face Hotel

As our trip enters its last legs, we'll venture back to Colombo and spend a day following the the cues of the Sri Lankans.

  • Try some of our favorite street food, Kottu Roti, a generous helping of curries and cheese.
  • Watch the and bask in the cool breeze from the Indian Ocean at the Galle Face Green and get in a quick game of cricket.
  • Experience Arrack, a drink interwoven in Sri Lankan history. This gentle liquor that comes from taping the flower of the coconut tree has been drunk from ages from Marco Polo to Magellan's crew. Learn how to drink it, mix it and relax for the remainder of the evening.

Sri Lanka's iconic landmark, the Galle Face Hotel, is situated in the heart of Colombo, along the seafront and facing the famous Galle Face Green.
