Dan’s Saturday Muse Aug 8, 2020

Dear Adventure Family,

Well, I know you have all had enough of COVID, and I am thinking you likely have had enough of my Saturday Ramblings. Let’s call this the last one. We will go back to pre-COVID practices of “E-Newsletters”, “E-Post Cards”, etc. I’ll still reach out from time to time and just keep you posted on the inside scoop.

You can call it wishful thinking or hopefully reality, but we are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel. Adventure Travelers are an intrepid bunch by nature — we have confirmed that in the last few weeks. We are now starting to see interest and bookings pick up. This week alone we have booked trips to the Galapagos, Costa Rica and Belize, yes still a few months out, but confidence in traveling is returning. We have also seen significant interest and bookings for 2021 travel, domestic adventures leading the pack. In fact, we are 32% over where we were this same time last year. (Full disclosure, at least some of that is due to re-bookings for 2021.) A step in the right direction was the recent decision by the U.S. State Department to lift its advisory on avoiding international travel, put in place five months ago.

Our good friends over at the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) just published the results of a survey that supports what we are seeing. (If you haven’t checked out the ATTA, visit https://www.adventuretravel.biz/.This is a great industry association we have been a part of since its conception in 1990. They have a consumer site at https://www.adventure.travel/

Here are a few interesting stats that came out of a recent consumer survey regarding travelers’ upcoming plans:

  • 75% are planning to travel in the next 6-12 months.
  • 70% are sticking closer to home with domestic travel plans
  • 56% already have their next trip planned
  • 84% plan to travel in small groups (10 or less)
  • 80% noted they are looking for nature, outdoor and active adventures
  • 53% plan to travel abroad in the next 6-12 months.

The trends for small group, custom, and exclusive adventures are right up our alley. No pivot needed here, this is our bread and butter. It’s time to get back to living and it starts with exploring our own backyard. Our full 2021 Lineup can be found here.

As always, we listen to you. We continue to add new adventures and new options across the US. As a reminder, we are using our 35 plus years to offer you the following (and then some):

  • Scheduled Adult and Family Adventures in and around our iconic National Parks.
  • Custom and Exclusive Adventures just for you and yours. If you can dream it we can build it — or just take over one of our scheduled departures just for your team.
  • Homestays: Pick one of our exclusive luxury mountain homes and let us provide the exceptional service you have become accustomed to.
  • Austin Concierge: From Self Drive to Day trips, we are here for you.
  • RV Trips: From pick up to drop off and all the adventures in between.

Well, that’s about enough for now. We sure appreciate each and every one of you. Your support, kindness and compassion in these challenging times have been a breath of fresh air. We remain focused on an exciting future and look forward to hosting you and yours wherever your travel dreams take you.

Oh wait, one more thing….. you knew it was coming. We are in a dead heat for the number one spot in the ongoing USA Today Poll for the World’s Best Adventure Travel Company. The criteria are tough and require voting each and every day throughout the duration of the contest. Please vote for your favorite company today (we sincerely hope that’s us), tomorrow and the next 10 days…. With your help we can take the top honors. https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-adventure-travel-company-2020/austin-adventures

Namaste my friends, namaste,
