It has been a cause of concern for many to hear that travel to Cuba under the “people-to-people” travel provision has been canceled. This new restriction resulted in many tour operators and cruise lines halting travel to the again forbidden island.
We are here to let you know that we are confident that Austin Adventures’ travelers will be protected and still able to travel to Cuba.
While Austin Adventures previously traveled to Cuba under the people-to-people travel provision in 2012 and 2016, we recently met with industry professionals and found a better, more culturally-immersive way to visit the island by using the provision support of the Cuban people.
What Was People-to-People?
Under the people to people travel license, travelers were permitted to travel to Cuba with a group tour operators but were to be sequestered to dine in government-operated restaurants, stay in government-sanctioned hotels, and had to maintain a full-time schedule of educational exchange activities intended to provide contact with the Cuban people.
Austin Adventures was one of the first tour operators to visit Cuba under the people to people act in 2012 and again in 2016 but found that the provisioning license did not lead to a truly culturally immersive experience. Restaurants all offered the same menu, hotels were shaggy and unkempt, and the offering of activities did not align with the high standards we hold ourselves to here at Austin Adventures.
How is Support the Cuban People License Different?
Under the travel license to Support the Cuban People, Americans are able to travel to Cuba to spend money legally, with each traveler engaging in a full-time schedule of activities that enhance contact with the Cuban people.
We have worked to establish a network of licensed professionals, accommodation providers and restaurant owners in Cuba. By keeping our groups small and intimate we are able to completely avoid using any of the Cuban government-owned hotels and restaurants. Each day will be filled with meaningful interactions and experiences that are moving and life-changing for all parties involved.
It’s All About the Locale
To ensure the most immersive and authentic experience possible, we have partnered with a small group of “Cuentapropistas,” or small Cuban business owners, who are all dedicated to ensuring your trip will be filled with meaningful interactions and experiences.
We are so excited to experience Cuba the way it was meant to be experienced — with the Cuban people. As on all our adventures, we strive to offer the most authentic experience for our guests and reach out to work with local small businesses to support the local community.
From learning to dance in Havana, eating in local restaurants, visiting art galleries or simply exploring the town to admire the beautiful street art, your days will be packed with significant experiences and memories that will last a lifetime.
The opportunity awaits; it’s up to you to walk through and experience this vibrant land and people.
