What is Your Adventure Vacation Style?

You have your own style. You dress your way, eat your way, and have fun your way. Why should your adventure vacation be any different?

Maybe you like to see new places in unique ways — from the seat of a bike, the middle of the river, or directly overhead whizzing by on a zip line; if it’s off the tourist track, it’s right on for you. Maybe you enjoy being active, but you also relish a luxurious soak, a scrumptious dinner, a soft bed, and a quiet cup of coffee by the lake. After all, there are two words in “adventure vacation,” and one of them implies that elusive concept in our fast-paced world: relaxation.

No matter your style, we love that you are you. That’s why we offer 5 unique ways to experience your best adventure vacation ever:

  • Scheduled group tours

  • Exclusive takeovers

  • Custom adventures

  • Austin Collection

  • Austin Concierge

Before we get into the particulars, though, let’s help you determine your style of adventure.

What is Your Adventure Vacation Style?

As with many things, determining your style of adventure requires a little self reflection. We like to break it down into a simple exercise of who, what, when, where, how and why.

  1. Who are you traveling with? What are their ages and interests and how many of you will there be?
  2. Who else would you like to meet on this vacation? Do you enjoy interacting with locals? Do you like to meet like-minded travelers who will become lifelong friends?

  1. What kind of recreation do you enjoy on vacation? Which activities (hiking, biking, kayaking, rafting, snorkeling, zip lining, climbing, etc.) do you like most? Are there any you don’t like?
  2. What types of cultural activities do you like? Do you like museums, historical sites, guided tours? Do you like to eat, learn about, and maybe even create local cultural foods and drinks?
  3. What is your budget? What can you realistically expect for that budget?
  4. What are some of your must-haves? Good food? Views and experiences off the tourist track? Lots of downtime?

  1. When do you want to travel? Do you have set dates? Do you have a specific area you want to see at a specific time of year?

  1. Where do you want to go? Are there certain countries, regions, or destinations that have long topped your bucket list? What do you most desire to see and do in that destination?

  1. How much time do you have to spend on your vacation?
  2. How independent do you want to be?
  3. How much input do you want on the itinerary? Do you want to pick a destination and let someone else handle all the details? Or do you want to share a wish list and have someone else make it happen?
  4. How are you best rejuvenated? How much time do you want to spend seeing and doing, and how much time do you want to spend relaxing?

  1. Why are you traveling? This may seem an obvious answer — to get away or see new things — but it often goes deeper than that. Does your family need to reconnect? Do you need time away from screens and digital noise? Is there a milestone you want to celebrate in a memorable way? Do you want to expand your horizons or do something brave?

Once you’ve answered at least some of these questions, you’re ready to determine your adventure vacation style!

The “Pick a Place and Go” Traveler:

You are busy, but you value the memories and rejuvenation you get from a high-quality vacation. It’s even better if you don’t have to plan a thing. You are traveling solo, as a couple, or as a small to medium-sized family with kids ranging in age from 6 to 66. You like being active, but you also enjoy some of the finer things in life: good food, excellent accommodations, little-known trails and views, and understanding a place rather than just seeing it. You are traveling to reconnect and experience the best in life, and you wouldn’t mind meeting a few like-minded travelers along the way.

Why the Scheduled Group Tour is right for you: You can peruse our website or Adventure Vacation Catalog, work with one of our Adventure Travel Consultants to pick the best trip, and that’s that. You simply bring your people and come ready to make new friends on these perfectly crafted, fully guided group tours in more than 80 destinations.

The “I Like That One, But I Don’t Want to Share” Traveler:

Much like the “Pick a Place and Go” Traveler, you want minimal planning and maximum fun — for you and your 17 closest friends and family members. You like to dream your way through a vacation catalog and know that no matter which trip you pick, it’s going to be great because you will be experiencing a new place in the most immersive way possible with the people you like most.

Why the Exclusive Takeover is right for you: For our bigger groups of friends or multi-generational families with a wide range of ages, we offer Exclusive Takeovers of our scheduled group tours. This means you pick a destination and a date that we already have on our schedule of departures, and you get it all for you and yours. If desired, because it’s now your adventure, we can add some special touches or changes to the itinerary to personalize it even more. You get the fully guided adventure vacation without having to share.

The “I’ve Always Wanted To Do This” Traveler:

You have a dream, and you’re ready to make it a reality — but not necessarily all by yourself. You have a wish list of places you want to go and things you want to do, and you’d love some expert help crafting those wishes into the ultimate vacation (you do the dreaming and someone else handles all the details), not to mention some expert guidance along the actual way. You may be a couple, a family with young children, a business team, or a group of friends. What’s just as important as who you are is what you want to accomplish. Dates and length of stay may or may not be a consideration.

Why the Custom Tour is right for you: You can dream big, pull out all the stops, and we’ll make it happen to give you an all-inclusive, fully escorted adventure vacation tailored for you and yours.

The “I Want the Adventure to Come to Me” Traveler:

You want to gather with your family or friends, connect with the beauty of the wonderful outdoors, and experience a remote and exotic locale — but you’d prefer to stay in one really nice place and have the adventure come to you. You’d like to choose your activities and when to do them and also have the freedom to enjoy a simple day at the spa or reading a book on your balcony with a view. You are celebrating a honeymoon or anniversary, or perhaps organizing a multi-generational family reunion. You like to be active, but relaxing is also prime.

Why the Austin Collection is right for you: This curated portfolio of some of the finest adventure lodges in the world was hand-picked by Dan and Carol Austin, extremely experienced travelers who know quality when they see it, meaning you don’t have to worry about anything but showing up and enjoying. The accommodations are of the highest class, and the on-site recreation and activities provide ample opportunity to explore and experience without having to pack your bags and journey onward.

The “I Want It My Way” Traveler:

You love to travel, but you hate to plan. You want the access, experience, connections, and knowledge found with a tour operator, but you’d like to take your vacation at your own pace. Heck, maybe you’d even like to take the keys and drive. You are traveling solo, as a couple, or as a small family with young children. You are independent but like the security of having someone book the best lodging, hire the best private guides, reserve activities with the best providers, and recommend the best route and restaurants.

Why Austin Concierge is right for you: Our newest adventure vacation option is a complete concierge service for those who want it “their way,” down to literally sitting in the driver’s seat if they’d like. You tell us where and when you’d like to go, which activities you’d like to do, and who you will be traveling with, and we’ll put our 35 years of travel planning experience and network of contacts to work for you to plan the route, book accommodations and activities, and recommend dining, must-see sites, and more. You get the thrill of independent travel, but you’re not on your own.
