Artis was born and raised in Milledgeville, Georgia. He is known to speak fluent Southern. After a very successful career inside the University System of Georgia, Artis was able to retire with his years of service at age 50. As a retirement gift to himself and as a 50th birthday present to my wife, they decided to take their first-ever active vacation. While on that trip, he told his wife that he wanted to become a trip guide for his “retirement” career…Growing up in rural Georgia, Arits’ childhood was spent outside – hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, swimming, and camping. With mountains to the North and the coast to the Southeast, Georgia provides a wonderland of fun and excitement for those who love the outdoors. Today, Artis spends a great deal of time on his Specialized Tarmac road bike and his BMC Fourstroke mountain bike. Artis and his wife of 25 years have competed in numerous triathlons and several Ironman events.
What’s your favorite vacation destination?
My wife and I love new locations – so it’s typically safe to say that our last vacation is always our favorite!
What’s your favorite hike?
Being from Georgia, I remember the first time I guided in Utah (and this was also my first trip to Utah). Zion National Park during the Fall provided a natural beauty as I had never seen before. Hiking the Narrows and Angel’s Landing will always have a special place in my heart.
What’s your favorite bike ride?
The Six-Gap Century road bike ride that begins in Dahlonega, Georgia is absolutely amazing. With six challenging climbs and 11,200 feet of elevation gain, you’d think the ride is miserable. But, the views, the rest stops, and the mountain towns make this one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever done on my bike. I look forward to the event every year!
I can’t choose just one – My Cousin Vinny, Airplane, Caddyshack, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. For someone who retired from higher education in the University System of Georgia, my cinematic tastes might not be where you expected. . .
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee.
I have such a diverse taste in music – and by diverse, I like a lot of country music. And Eminem.
When did you first catch the travel bug?
Camping with my parents.
What are your hobbies? Spending time with my wife and daughter is without a doubt my happy place… But, I enjoy biking, hiking, kayaking, gardening, cooking, and traveling.
