Carol Austin, born and raised in Montana, grew up exploring the Rocky Mountains and Canada. Through Austin Adventures she’s had the chance to visit many wonderful places, but her bucket list is still very long, and of course, it grows every time she travels somewhere new. Even after all of these years, Yellowstone is still her favorite place on earth! Working alongside her husband Dan, Carol is going on 20+ years in her role as an Adventure Travel Consultant, working with guests everyday to build vacations of a lifetime. When asked her favorite things about her job, it would have to be working with both guests and operators from around the world. From that, one can learn something new every day.
What’s your favorite vacation destination(s)?
My backyard – the wonderful Rocky Mountains, the Southwest and the Oregon Coast.
What is your favorite historical site, castle, museum, etc.?
Ohhh the list is long!! The Beaches of Normandy, Normandy American Cemetery, Anne Frank’s House in Amsterdam, the Holocaust Museum in DC; I’ve always been fascinated with that time period. The Louvre and the Musee d’Orsay. The Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and Arlington Cemetery. The Loire Valley for its castles. Nelson Mandela’s Museum. The Qoricancha Temple of the Sun & Machu Picchu in Peru. The Statue of Liberty. And a bit closer to home: the Little Bighorn Battlefield & Museum of the Rockies.
What is your favorite hike?
Iceberg Lake, which we hike to on our Glacier National Park Adventure!
What is your favorite bike ride?
I loved biking Germany’s Mosel Valley, one of our featured Europe bike trips. But here at home, I love riding River Road along the Yellowstone River.
What is your favorite Austin Adventures trip?
Sweet Home Alabama or Bridesmaids. Or really anything with Sean Connery, Sam Elliot, Bradley Cooper & Matthew McConaughey (love their voices). But, if given the choice between TV and reading, I usually choose reading instead.
That’s tough as my favorite book is often what I just finished reading! Two of my favorite recent reads are “We Were the Lucky Ones” and “Where the Crawdads Sing.” I’m always looking for new suggestions!!
“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper, “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical, Rent, and the entire soundtrack from The Lion King. I also enjoy anything from the 80’s, old time rock & roll, or classical (I played cello for 8 years).
Describe the most amazing experience you’ve had while selling a trip.
I love helping multi-generational families plan out their vacations and hearing all about the incredible memories they made when they get back.
When did you first catch the travel bug?
When I was little my dad hauled us all over the western US and Canada. We didn’t have a lot growing up, but we certainly had a sense of adventure. I actually didn’t fly for the first time until I was a junior in high school.
What are your favorite outdoor activities?
Hiking, fishing, exploring the mountains, working in my yard, and Harley rides with Dan.
What are your hobbies?
Cooking (especially baking), reading, and Orange Theory workouts.
