What’s your favorite vacation destination(s)?
Serengeti safari, hands down. Tanzania is a paradise for nature enthusiasts. While the Big 5 are the obvious highlights (deservedly so), I was also enamored with how the Serengeti’s entire ecosystem supports itself. My favorite are the acacia ants which have a symbiotic relationship with a family of bushes of the same name. They live in little pods found on the plant’s branches while surviving on its nectar. When the bush is threatened they come out to defend it from predatory species. How cool is that!
What is your favorite historical site, castle, museum, etc.?
Bagan, Myanmar (historical site); Pena Palace, Portugal (castle); Titanic Museum, Belfast (museum)
What is your favorite hike?
So many. Hiking in Peru’s Sacred Valley is very special, but my recent favorite was a hike to Iceland’s Reykjadalur Hot Spring Thermal River. We arrived as the sun was setting. It was October, so quite chilly. We jumped into the thermal river and enjoyed the stars for hours before hiking back down with headlamps
What is your favorite bike ride?
Any trail ride in Vermont (VMBA!)
What is your favorite Austin Adventures trip?
Sri Lanka/ Indian Ocean perfectly blends the Island’s incredible natural and cultural histories, not to mention the impressively regal and chic accommodations throughout
Anything Bond. The new Casino Royal is the best modern Bond, while Goldfinger takes the cake for classic
Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela. One of the most resilient, dignified and accomplished individuals of our time
That’s tough, maybe Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival but if I could cheat I’d just take the entire Forrest Gump Soundtrack
When did you first catch the travel bug?
I guess you could say I was a fortunate son (haha), as I grew up in a family that strongly valued travel. My mother worked in the travel industry and constantly shared her passion with me. After high school, the bug firmly set in during a gap year spent backpacking and working through Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
What are your favorite outdoor activities?
Mountain biking, hiking and skiing – I’m a certified ski instructor.
What are your hobbies?
Getting outside, strumming the guitar and chasing around my son (he’s fortunate also!)
