Ívar

Ívar

For years, Ívar was the most active ice climber in Iceland, racking up hard ascents and first ascents. He has been guiding with us since 2002 on and off, becoming full-time in 2008. Much of Ívar's guiding involves ski-touring - Vatnajökull expeditions – hiking trips, including over 70 summits of Hvannadalshnúkur – mountain biking – hard Ice Climbing – Gunnbjörn expeditions in Greenland – and summits of Mt. Blanc, Mt. Elbrus, Mt. Vinson in Antarctica.

Ivar also manages and develops mountaineering and climbing courses and is involved in the training of glacier and mountain guides.

What’s your favorite vacation destination(s)?

Anywhere with good skiing and ski-touring! Lately, I have been looking at skiing more in eastern Europe. European countries add a cultural flair to the trip that the well-established ski towns in the Alps no longer offer.

What is your favorite historical site, castle, museum, etc.?

I could not name a favorite, but I love visiting castles if I can, especially where you can see more than just the glitter of the king’s quarters – I also enjoy visiting where the common people lived.

What is your favorite hike?

For something done in a single day, there is the roundtrip adventure to Kristínartindar in Skaftafell that is appealing because it has some of the best views I have ever seen– chapter after chapter of any book on geology can be seen and explained there. It is incredible!

What is your favorite bike ride?

Any ride that is fast flowing and semi-rough – love it. It does not have to have the greatest landscapes because I usually have my eyes on the trail and my front tire! :)

What is your favorite Austin Adventures trip?

Ha, ha, - it will be the next one… I have only completed one trip so far in the SE of Iceland. It was an awesome adventure with really fun guests.

Favorite Movie?

Give me almost anything by Quentin Tarantino – love the dark humor.

Favorite Book?

Jonathan Livingston’s Seagull.

Favorite Song?

Not deep into it enough to have a favorite – Check out the Icelandic band, Kaleo – I will be playing that and more Icelandic stuff.

When did you first catch the travel bug?

To be honest, I am a terrible traveler. I always just did climbing and skiing trips. That opened up the world of adventure for me – without it, I probably would have fallen into the trap of mundane beach vacations.

What are your favorite outdoor activities?

Climbing was it, but now I go for type 1 fun – skiing and ski touring in the winter and mountain biking in the summer – trail running to keep fit.

What are your hobbies?

Skiing, mountain biking – a little ice climbing. Trail running is great.
