  • Kayak the canals of Tortuguero National Park to a soundtrack of exotic birdsong, watching for monkeys, caimans, crocodiles and turtles

Day 1: San José
San José
Meals Included:  No meals

On Day 1, arrive at the San José Airport where you will be greeted by an Austin Adventures representative before a short transfer to the charming Hotel Bougainvillea, your home for the night.

This evening you will have a chance to meet your guides and the rest of your group at the welcome meeting.

Enjoy dinner on your own tonight as you explore the area!

About Hotel Bougainvillea
Set among 10 acres of lush gardens, the unique and comfortable Hotel Bougainvillea is a place where guests can truly experience the world famous beauty of Costa Rica.

Original pieces of Costa Rican art complement the stunning landscaped tropical gardens dominated by tall trees, plentiful flowers, ponds and mountain views.

Day 2: Tortuguero National Park

On Day 2, enjoy a nice breakfast before your pick-up at Hotel Bougainvillea.

After a flight to Tortuguero, begin your kayak adventure through the backwater canals of Tortuguero National Park, experiencing places not accessible by motorboat and abundant with wildlife, including turtles and manatees.

Lunch will be served back at Evergreen Lodge, followed by a riverboat tour of more of Costa Rica’s beautiful natural canals.

Enjoy dinner and relaxation as you prepare yourself for the next day.

About the Evergreen Lodge
Accessible only by water transport and only a 5-minute boat ride from the entrance to Tortuguero National Park, this secluded and magical area is sure to amaze you.

Evergreen Lodge is the perfect combination of luxury and relaxation.

Day 3: Bird Watching / Casa Turire

This morning will present an opportunity for the early risers to take a bird-watching tour by boat. A late breakfast will be served at Evergreen Lodge, followed by a boat and van transfer (~ 3 hours) to Casa Turire, your home for the night.

  • Enjoy lunch and relax during your transfer as you prepare yourself for an afternoon and evening of leisure to explore with your guide at Casa Turire
  • Perhaps opt for a massage in the spa
  • Dinner will be served at your hotel tonight

About Casa Turire
A gateway to the rain forest and to Costa Rica's world famous whitewater rafting, Casa Turire combines the gracious charm of a colonial plantation home with the relaxed refinement of a Caribbean hacienda.

In the heart of the verdant Turrialba agricultural region, this beautiful estate is flanked by the wild Reventazón River with the imposing presence of the Turrialba Mountains as a dramatic backdrop.

Day 4: Pacuare River Rafting / Transfer to Arenal

On Day 4, depart Casa Turire after enjoying a fresh breakfast.

  • Prepare yourself for the rafting adventure of a lifetime as you drive to your put-in spot on the Pacuare River.
  • Paddle the exhilarating class III and IV rapids of the Pacuare River as it snakes through a virgin canyon past waterfalls and lush rainforest canopy
  • National Geographic Magazine calls the Pacuare River one of the top ten river trips in the world
  • Lunch will be served at the rafting center before your departure to Mountain Paradise Hotel • Sit back and take in the scenery on your transfer to your lodging this evening (~ 5 hours)

Dinner in the town of La Fortuna: guide’s choice. You will be ready to relax and enjoy the hospitality at Mountain Paradise Hotel.

With the beautiful views of the volcano and fantastic setting, Mountain Paradise Hotel offers luxurious relaxation and excellent accommodations.

The private cottages are equipped with a jacuzzi on each porch and a spacious pool that is just steps away.

Day 5: Arenal National Park Canyoning / Sky Tram / Zip Line Tour / Ecotermales

Once again this morning, early risers will have the option to go on a bird-watching tour. After fueling up with breakfast, get ready for a full day of adventure!

  • Your trip begins with a short drive to the Sky Tram
  • The aerial tram offers visitors a stunning, incomparable view of Arenal Lake and Arenal Volcano
  • Sail over the rainforest up to an observation point where you’ll start the Sky Trek zip line
  • At some points along the way you will be over 130 feet above the treetops. The 3,280 foot long zip line system gives guests an exhilarating ride and an opportunity to enjoy the rain forest with beautiful views

Following your traditional Costa Rican lunch, get ready for the excitement of a canyoning tour! From the first waterfall you will rappel down from the top into the beautiful and pristine canyon below.

The adventure includes 5 rappels, 4 of which are along waterfalls and one dry rock face. The perfect end to your busy day will come when you head to the Ecotermales Hot Springs and enjoy dinner and a soak.

At the Hot Springs at Ecotermales you can soak in a series of 4 pools, each one progressively hotter as you get closer to the natural source.

Day 6: Arenal Volcano Hike / Transfer to San José

Spend the morning hiking the Arenal Volcano National Park through a well-protected secondary forest to see wildlife, including:

  • White-throated Capuchins
  • Howler Monkeys
  • Toucans

  • Black Guans
  • Crested Guans
  • Coatis and Collared Peccaries

Learn about key aspects of Arenal Volcano as you hike around this conical beauty. Afterward, head over to the town of San Ramón for some lunch (~1.5 hours).

Return to San José’s Finca Rosa Blanca by shuttle (~ 1.5 hours) for a farewell dinner.

The Finca Rosa Blanca Resort is a coffee farm plantation and luxurious inn that crowns the central valley mountain highlands of Costa Rica.

Located only a short distance from the San Jose International Airport, it has long offered eco-travelers a luxurious, sustainable boutique hotel experience.

Departure
  • Your trip begins with your arrival in San José at Costa Rica’s Juan Santamaría International Airport. A
  • fter passing through Immigration, take the right hand side exit door and look for the Sun Tours representative who will direct you to customs.
  • When you leave the building after clearing customs, look for a Sun Tours representative, who will be holding a sign that says “Costa Rica Sun Tours” with your name on it.
  • Your guide will take you to the Hotel Bougainvillea. Your trip ends with a drop-off at the San José airport three hours prior to your flight departure.
Activities
  • Hiking: Easy to moderately strenuous hikes ranging from 3 to 5 miles.
  • River rafting: Class III and IV rapids, no experience necessary.
  • Kayaking: Calm waters, no experience necessary.
  • Canyoning: No experience necessary, guides inspect all equipment and provide detailed instruction.
  • Zip Line: No experience necessary.
